He was born into a wealthy family in Italy and renounced his worldly possessions and privileges to embrace a life of poverty and service to God and his creation. He received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, and is known for his love of animals and nature. He is the patron saint of ecology, animals, merchants, and Italy. His feast day is October 4.
